Self Tying

The Urge – Self Tying as an Act of Know Thyself.

Physical and Meta-physicality of Rope

My first approach to Self Tying was an act of pure curiosity, it started as a glimpse of inspiration about the journey of the body and the rope, about the detailed sensations of my skin and soul entangled in the hug of jute, tightly embracing the present moment, inviting me to play in the rythm of my breath.

My body was always shape-shifting, through dance and improvisation I landed on challenges of movement and stilness, in the ground and in the air, with and without ropes. It was always about this Altered State of Consciousness that opens the Present moment, that allows me to breath deep nothingness, and oneness at the same time.

I started to practice knots, frictions, tensions and fluidity of Shibari with my first Shibari Rigger, Master M in Lisbon (2019) who introduced me to this Art in a Power Dynamic aspect, that, after 1 year started to transmute into questions like:

Can I tie myself ? And why would I ?” – And I had so many ideas, so many possibilities that my body shaped in ropes already as a bottom… I wish I could materialize this feeling of infiniteness by myself…” – So I did, I started to apply the techniques I was learning on my own body.

I learned different Shibari ryu for 3 years (Akira Naka, Hajime Kinoko, Akechi Kanna, Yukimura Haruki, Yagami Ren…) but the most challenging was not the knots, not the ropes, but actually the fluctuation between this Altered States that I had to learn and practice to align with breath and body so I could tie myself and be aware of the body while drifting away of it at the same time. After I mastered techniques and Phisicality of Rope on my interest topics, I started to work with Ritualism and Meta-Physicality of it, researching on what actually happen in our body, mind and soul while experiencing ropes.

Practice and Learn Self-Tie

If you are also curious about this practice there are a few steps I can guide you into it. First of all, find your purposes, find them deep inside you, ask your body and your mind how the experience can bring you more in touch with yourself, and with your intentions. There are different ways of learning but all of them will demand practice and discipline. If you are looking for a self aware practice you can start by learning the basic techniques of Shibari and research on rope flow and your own bio-rythms and patterns (breath, focus, body resilience, etc.) so you can bring together Physicality and Meta-Physicality into consciousness. Observe your body, how it reacts to the touch, the smell and sound of the rope. Observe your breath and how it’s affected by the speed and tension of the rope. Then learn how to guide them through the rope paths and patterns. When you practice, always be aware of safety, body damage and emotional damage. Look for people and places that can help you grow, different visions will enrich your imagination and expand your knowlege and possibilities in ropes.
